The Redbrand Scourge
Session 3

Rorhic apologized and tried to give the amulet of eavesdropping to Quinlan and he insisted that Rorhic keep it. After a short rest, Prim disguised himself, Rorhic, PokeyMan and Rowan with the redbrand cloaks and they ventured through the secret door with the rest of the party trailing at a distance. PokeyMan and Rorhic boldly discovered a hidden pit trap by falling into it, and Prim jumped back with a leap of talented dexterity. Climbing out of the pit with some help, the party continued past a large double door into a family crypt. They stepped over the remains of 3 skeletons as they investigated the room deciding the crypts were permanently sealed as one of them wouldn’t budge open with much striving. Just as the rest of the party caught up, the skeletons stood up and 3 more pushed easily out of the crypts attacking the party. The vigilant sorceress Yue quickly fired off 3 magic missiles, and the whole party engaged. PokeyMan fiercely busted the head off a skeleton and rolled it to Prim’s feet. A gift for Prim! Rorhic fought bravely, but slumped to the ground under a flurry of skeleton attacks, luckily right at Rowan’s feet who then healed him. Quinlan crushed in the skull of a skeleton with this crossbow just as Idris transformed into a huge bear with a loud roar biting the skull off a skeleton’s torso and crushing its rib cage with his mighty claw swipe.

Blessed by the Gods themselves Prim aimed his hand crossbow that had been passed down for generations at the horrid beast that stood next to his friend. As the mighty creature made of pure evil threaten his friend Prim pulled the trigger to his hand cross bow. Years of training had all lead up to this one moment, this once chance to redeem himself for all the missed shots, this one chance to avenge his fallen brethren. With a might thwack! the arrow hit its mark for a massive 6 damage. PokeyMan then knocked another head off with his glorious quarterstaff also rolling it right to Prim’s feet. Skeleton golf! Quinlan attacked with his blade glowing green and burned another skeleton into ash just as Idris bear mauled the last skeleton to bits. Prim collected a skull and the party searched around finding 3 platinum signet rings worth 50 gp each while Rowan healed battle wounds.

Quietly opening the east door, Quinlan attacked 3 redbrands with his dissonant whispers and PokeyMan thumped one on the head with two glorious attacks of his quarterstaff. Idris then killed the redbrand with a vicious bear bite to give him a nut ache to go with his headache. Rorhic ran another redbrand through with his shortsword poking his nose open…eew. PokeyMan attempted a daring dukes of hazard slide across the table to attack the last redbrand and just kept on sliding to fall prone on the floor. Rowan ran the last redbrand through with her longsword and Rorhic thumped him off with a powerful strike. Rowan shouted “surrender!” and the redbrand wisely dropped his weapon. Rowan interrogated him learning that there are 3 bugbears and several more redbrands farther in as well as the wizard Glass Staff. We also learned that the dead body of the woodcarver was taken to be fed to terrible monsters in a pit farther in.

Taking the keys from one of the dead redbrands, we freed the woodcarver’s wife Mirna and her son and daughter. Out of gratitude, Mirna told us where a valuable heirloom is hidden and that she wants us to have it if we can find it. When she was a young girl, she and her family fled from the town of Thundertree after undead overran the place. Her family had an herb and alchemy shop where there was a case containing an emerald necklace hidden beneath a section of storage shelves. She never dared to return and retrieve it. The shop was in the southeast part of Thundertree which just east of Neverwinter following the river. Yue promised Mirna that we would bring her the body of her husband if we can find it, and encouraged Mirna to take her children and leave the manor and she quickly did that. We then knocked the captive redbrand out, PokeyMan poured the chamber pot bucket over his head, and locked him in the manacles that had held the captives also locking the cell door. Prim sang a song of rest for us and we took a short rest and healed up some.

Quinlan scouted ahead, and telepathically whispered to Prim to come join him. Prim found a secret door through a crack in the wall. Searching a storage room, the party found an amulet with a green gemstone and a dagger with the name Persuasion. Prim identified them as an amulet of the dragon sentinel which faintly glows when dragons are within a 100 foot radius and a Loquacious Dagger +1 Persuasion: The bearer gains +1 to Charisma (Persuasion) checks. Quinlan noticed something strange about a torch and discovered it was a leaver and with a bold leap of acrobatics hurled his tiny form straight up and pulled it. In the next room we found 30 beaver pelts worth 2 gp each. Quinlan and Prim went ahead down the stairs and Prim tripped rolling into a secret door and triggering it.

Upon landing in the room and coming face to face with the master wizard that had terrorized the kingdom for years Prim employed his quick wits and his silver tongue to hypnotize the Arch Wizard Destroyer of realms known as Glass Staff. Prim told the heart wrenching story of how he grew up in a bad part of town and how he became a part of the Redbeards. The Baron of Blood Shed was hooked onto every word Prim said as he described his climb up the ranks to where he was today and how he risked everything to warn the Destroyer of Dynasties that enemies where approaching. Thanks to Prim quick wit the rest of the party had time to do whatever it is they were doing. Quinlian telepathically shouted “jenga” to Rowan and she told everyone to charge down the stairs with her.

Quinlan threatened the wizard holding the glass staff. Rowan asked him if he knows Sildar Hallwinter, and he confirmed yes, and explained that he is is Sildar’s friend Iarno Albrek and that he killed the evil wizard Glass Staff and took his form to infiltrate the redbrands and try to learn the identity of the Black Spider. He explained he has not yet met the Black Spider. When Rowan told him that Sildar sent us to find him, he dropped his illusion and turned into a wizard matching the description Sildar gave us for Iarno. Rowan told him about Gundren’s capture and that we need his help to find Cragmaw Castle to rescue Gundren. Prim disguised as a redbrand dove onto Iarno knocking his staff to the ground. Quinlan grabbed Iarno’s staff and tried to swing at his throat with his rapier, missing (Prim edit) [thanks to the bravery of prim acting as a body shield. If not for his noble sacrifice we could have lost a noble ally and a man pure of heart]. Rorhic aimed a strike at Quinlan then Idris in his huge bear form then pushed his way in between Quinlan and Iarno. Prim still pretending to be a redbrand stood up in disgust and shouted, “He was my leader! This man is an imposter!”

Searching the office we found a note in his desk: “My spies in Neverwinter tell me that strangers are due to arrive in Phandalin. They could be working for the dwarves. Capture them if you can, kill them if you must, but don’t allow them to upset our plans. See that any dwarven maps in their possession are delivered to me with haste. I’m counting on you, Glass Staff. Don’t disappoint me.” Iarno told us it was a note from the Black Spider to Glass Staff. At the foot of Glass Staff’s bed was a sturdy, unlocked wooden chest holding the best pickings of the Redbrands’ loot over the last two months. It contains 180 sp, 130 gp, and a silk pouch containing five carnelians (10 gp each), two peridots (15 gp each), and one pearl (100 gp). It also contains two magic items that Iarno brought with him from Neverwinter: a scroll of charm person and a scroll of fireball. Iarno also wields a staff of defense.

Looking over the spell lab, PokeyMan looking over the chemicals realized that glass staff was about half way through making an invisibility potion. Among the books is a tome written in Dwarvish. The journal of an adventurer named Urmon, it describes the history of the Lost Mine of Phandelver and the Forge of Spells. In addition, Urmon records that a magic mace named Lightbritiger was commissioned by priests of Lathander, the god of dawn, from the mages working with the gnomes and dwarves of the Phandelver’s Pact. The mace was lost when Wave Echo Cave and its mine vanished from history. With that Prim took a bow and dropped his redbrand disguise. Prim cracked his knuckles and started brewing up the last of the potion on the lab with PokeyMan and Rorhic assisting. It worked! With a triumphant smile Prim held up a potion of invisibility?!?

Suspicious and mistrustful, Quinlan tied up Iarno and poked holes in a barrel and asked Iarno to have his familiar rat climb in to wait for us to come back. Iarno went along with this good naturedly. Iarno told us of the redbrand guards ahead and the 3 bugbears and offered to help us through with a seeming spell to fully disguise all of us as redbrands. Those who did not yet have a redbrand cloak took one off the hooks and we threw one over the bear as well (looked like Jeff but fat), Rowan untied Iarno and he cast a seeming on all of making us look like various redbrands we have met returning his illusion to be Glass Staff.

With that, we walked into the guard room where 4 redbrands were playing a game at a table. Iarno seemed to have them fooled escorting us past into the next room when one got suspicious of Fat Jeff (Idris)and stood up. Prim ran to defend her guise but was foiled when Rorhic attacked and Fat Jeff (Idris) swiped at him killing him with a mauling attack. Go Fat Jeff! Iarno quickly shot off 3 magic missiles at another redbrand, and Quinlan snuck up on another redbrand killing him. With a sleight of hand Prim scooped up all the coin on the table and pocketed it, none of us noticing. PokeyMan knocked the head off a redbrand with his glorious quarterstaff rolling yet another head at Prim’s feet. Fat Jeff finished off the last guard while Quinlan looked around muttering he could have sworn there was gold on the table…

Rowan prayer to Lurue for unicorn guidance and blessed PokeyMan, Quinlan and herself before we went into the next room. Quinlan quietly pushed the door open and fired his light crossbow at a bugbear with a sneak attack. Prim lit them up with some fairy fire, and we all engaged in a fierce battle of blows and magic missiles from Yue killing two of them. Rowan killed the last of the glowing bugbears with a cry, “for Lurue!” as she ran him through with her longsword. Still suspicious, Quinlan tied Iarno’s hands again and boosting him up onto Idris’s back. Prim freed the captive goblin, Droop, that the bugbears had been torturing. Droop was surprisingly convincing and eloquant for a goblin and Prim agreed to take him with us to give him a chance to train in the Thunderdome promising Quinlan that Droop would be in his custody. Searching around we found 100 sp and an eyepatch studded with stones worth 50gp.

Going forward into the cavern, Rorhic drew the attention of some vile nothics just as PokeyMan and Rowan were going in the other entrance carrying a bugbear body. The nothics used their weird insight and saw a secret from Pokeman’s past and tormented him with it sending him to the ground holding his head as they played vividly in his mind’s eye. Rowan tripped over the bugbear corpse trying to defend PokeyMan falling prone. Quinlan quickly jumped up into the bear’s back and cut Iarno free aiming his crossbow at the nothics taking his shot. Prim told Droop to hide and waded into the battle in the cavern, singing a song of inspiration for PokeyMan and taking much damage dropping unconscious. Iarno healed Prim, and Prim cast heroism to make a stunning comeback. Fat Jeff the bear put his nose through one of the nothics killing it, and Quinlan was knocked out by nothic attacks. With bardic inspiration from Prim, Rorhic punched the last nothic in the eye, grabbed the eye and tore it out for the kill. Prim then collected the eye to add it to the goodies we are taking back to Pookie while Rowan went over to Quinlan and quickly cast spare the dying on him. Yue spotted a chest tucked just under the bridge, and with a daring athletic leap scooped it up. Yue pointed to the body of the woodcarver and said we promised to bring it back to his wife Mirna Over all, we found 42gp and 42 silver each. The chest is still closed, we planned to open it back at the inn. 457 Experience Points each.

Phandalin Redbrand Hunting
Session 2

After spending the night resting in the campsite outside the Cragmaw Hideout, our bard Prim used rituals to identify the magical items we found. The light crossbow (inscribed Vera) is a +1 light crossbow of falling stars. It contains 1 charge of Scorching Ray spell (1st level) replenishable by a long rest and can fire 1 ray at a time 2d6 fire or all 3 at once as an action. The bearer may choose to change the damage type of weapon to Radiant and get a +1 bonus to the damage roll. After some discussion it was agreed that Yue should have Vera, and she gave her former light crossbow to Quinlan.

Then our brave party of adventurers made their way south along the road escorting the cart and Sildar to the village of Phandalin without event. We brought the cart of the much-needed provisions to Elmor Barthen at Barthen’s provisions delivering the supplies and he paid each party member 15 gp for their work.. He also gave us a chest to deliver back to Wes in Neverwinter, and Quinlan took responsibility for keeping it safe. Barthen said he was willing to buy the small jade frog statue for 40 gp, but the party decided not to sell it at this time in case it is needed as part of our quest.

Prim and Idris started spreading word of the world’s greatest bard being in town for one night only performing at the Stonehill Inn.

The party then took the part of the provisions meant for Sister Garaele over to her. A cleric of the goddess of luck, Tymora, she was looking worse for wear and she told us of being ambushed by an orc raiding party north on triboar trail. She was on a quest to find a missing spellbook from the banshee Agatha, BoGentle’s spellbook. Sister Garaele offered to make us 3 healing potions to find the spellbook and deliver it to her and the party accepted the quest. She told us that the banshee lair is near Coneyberry ruins, and we should take the left trail up into her lair. She gave us a comb to give to Agatha to aid us in this quest. Rowan then bought a vial of holy oil from Sister Garaele.

We met a former adventurer in the orchard, Daran Edermath, and he told us of Dendrar, a local woodcarver, who stood up to the Redbrand ruffians ten days ago when they came by his shop and leered at his wife. The Redbrands murdered him, grabbed his body, and now his wife, daughter, and son have gone missing too. Several townsfolk saw it happen.

The party made our way to the inn and met Toblin Stonhill, the innkeeper at the Stonehill Inn. Prim negotiated a good price for a rooms in return for a performance. A few tankards of ale led to a heated discussion about the quarterstaff with both Rorhic and PokeyMan wanting the quarterstaff, so they agreed to arm wrestle for it, the party cheering on the fierce dragonborn and fighter (Prim taking some bets). PokeyMan won the bout and claimed Glimmer to attune to it. The quarterstaff (inscribed Glimmer) is a glorious quarterstaff. The bearer may choose to change the damage type of weapon to Radiant and get a +1 bonus to the damage roll.

Prim gave a fabulous performance including music, illusions, and bugbear head puppetry, and the party chatted with other inn patrons. A local miner told us that the Redbrand thugs who murdered the woodcarver hang out at the Sleeping Giant tavern.

After a good night’s rest, the party made our way to the Sleeping Giant after dawn hoping to surprise the Rebrands with the early hour. Prim approached the two guards at the door first, and requested to enter and play for the tavern. They threw rocks at him and told him to dance for his entrance, and were so impressed by Prim’s amazing performance they opened the door and let him in. Rorhic then demanded entrance and the guards took that as an invitation for a fight and drew their weapons. Quinlan stealthily snuck up and fired his light crossbow at one. PokeyMan attacked with his quarterstaff and Idris pulled the other one away from the door with his thorn whip. Inside the tavern Prim charmed the bartender into letting him play for the tavern. His delightful morning performance kept the other Redbrands inside while the rest of the party made short work of the two guards. Prim brought sleep to the Sleeping Giant tavern and put one of the Redbrands inside to sleep, while the party entered to engage the other Redbrands, Idris leading the charge with a skillful thunderwave blast hitting two of them. Rowan finished one off with her long sword, Yue blasted them with firebolts, and Rorhic took out another one with a ball kicking strike.

The last sleeping Redbrand was tied up and interrogated. The adventurers learned that he didn’t know anything about the wizard Iarno we’re looking for, however a creepy wizard named Glassstaff joined the Redbrands at the manor and the Redbrands took him in on the orders of the Black Spider. The woodcarver’s wife and children are also there. He told us there are a dozen to 20 Redbrands in the manor and a creature they keep, and a handful of bugbears. We found 50 gold 60 sp and 35 cp on all dead Redbrands, and we let the captured Redbrand go as he swore he was leaving the bandits and immediately left town under the watchful glare of Quinlan.

Most of the part kept guard while taking a short rest outside the Sleeping Giant, and Rowan went to visit the Phandalin town hall. She found a notice posted outside: “REWARD-Orcs near Wyvern Tor! Those of a mind to face the orc menace should inquire within.” Rowan entered and talked with the townmaster Harbin Wester. He offered a reward of 100 gp to handle the orc problem at Wyvern Tor and end the orc raids along the Triboar Trail. To get there we should go northeast half way to Coneyberry then straight east through the mountains to the orc base at Wyvern Tor. She told him the knights of Order of the Unicorn would valiantly accept his quest! He seemed concerned when she told him about the group’s breakfast at the Sleeping Giant, and she assured him that our next stop is out to the manor to rid Phandalin of its Redbrand scourge.

After the short rest, most of the party returned to the Stonehill Inn to ask Sildar if he thinks Glasstaff could be his friend Iarno. Quinlan and PokeyMan stayed to keep guard outside the Sleeping Giant tavern to prevent the return of any other Redbrands. Sildar offered the party 200 gp to find out what happened to Iarno and to bring him or what is left of him back. The party accepted the quest, and Sildar left for the town hall to talk with the townmaster.

The party then made their way to the ruins of the manor, and snuck down into a seemingly empty cellar. Rowan slipped while investigating the cistern and fell in. Just as she was climbing out, the door flew open knocking her back in the water and opportunity attacks from PokeyMan and Quinlan killed the first Redbrand to charge through the door. Idris turned into a ferocious tiger jumping onto a tiny ledge on the cistern. The ledge already made wet by Rowan caused the large tiger to join her in the water. Eventually Rowan joined in the fight after climbing out of the water again dripping water with each attack of her longsword. Prim spent part of the battle scowling at his hand crossbow and seemed to be concerned it was malfunctioning. Idris jumped out of the water with a roar shaking water off into PokeyMan’s eyes, and attacked with a fierce bite. After an intense battle, Yue finished off the final Redbrand with a firebolt. The redbrand in his death throws ran while on fire to a wall near the entrance and began clawing at it as the fire reduced him to a burning heap.

Quinlan found a false door where the redbrand was clawing, and Prim sang a song of rest as the party decided to take a short rest to heal. Having had a couple of visits into the cistern, Rowan found a rope tied to a waterproof satchel containing a potion of healing, a potion of invisibility, 50gp, and a set of travelers clothes. Searching the guard room, we found some coin and 4 Redbrand cloaks. Behind some barrels, PokeyMan found an amulet which he gave to Rorhic. Quinlan asked for the amulet to give it to Prim to identify, and Rorhic refused, so Quinlan asked two more times with Rorhic refusing. Then Quinlan suggested he might stab Rorhic in the eye if he didn’t get it identified, and Rorhic blasted Quinlan with his dragonborn lightning breath. Quinlan backed off in disgust and let him have the amulet. Eventually Rorhic did show the amulet to Prim. (It is an amulet of eavesdropping — As long as it is on the same plane, the bearer can hear through this item as if they were present.) Everyone was shocked by Rorhic’s behavior, and it’s not clear if Prim told Rorhic what it does. After some trial and error, Quinlan found he could easily ride on the back of Idris in tiger form looking very cool on a tiger mount, and the party finished up our short rest with a debate about if a tiger saddle would stay with Idris when he changes form.

Into the cave, straight back out of the cave
Session 1

In the Thunderdome in Neverwinter Wes the Shield recieves a magical letter in a wooden cylinder from Sister Garaele stating the caravan with provisions and medicine is late and has not made it to Phandalin. Worried about what had happened to such a large escort party the Goliath set off once again for Pookie’s shop and hired a Mercenary fighter named Pokeyman Jones to go scout and find out what happened to them. He tested him in the Thunderdome as the previous party had been tested and upon victory he sent him down the highroad to try to locate the party.

As the Party awoke with their wounds healed they ventured into the cave. Upon entering the cave they heard gnashing of teeth and snarling right around the corner of the entrance to the cave. They noticed that 4 wolves were tied down with a stake and chain to a rock. They attempted to kill the wolves at a distance but upon being stuck the wolves ripped themselves free from their bindings and set upon the party. Pokeyman Jones found the goblin they had tied up and got the information to locate the party. He showed up in the nick of time to join the fight with wolves. Yue attacked with a firebolt and her dagger, Rorhic used his dragonborn lightning breath, shortsword and unarmed strikes, Pokeyman attacked with his quarterstaff with a butt-end 2nd attack, Quinlan did a sneak attack with his rapier, Prim fired off shots with his hand crossbow and his dagger, Idris fired a poison spray, and Rowan used her sacred flame attack. Idris, Rorhic and Quinlan took the brunt of the wolves ire with Idris passing out from blood loss from a wolf bite. Rowan healed Idris with her healing touch before he completely bled out. Calling on the blessing of her goddess Larue, Rowan cast spare the dying to stablilize Rorhic and the party rested while he healed. The party introduced themselves and explained the situation and Pokeyman Jones offered his assistance in finding their patrons.

The party explored the wolves den and saw a chimney which went directly into Klarg’s throne room, Yue tried to use a mage hand to tie a rope so the party could climb up but it was spotted and Klarg’s bodyguards shot the mage hand dispelling it. The Goblins sounded the alarm in the hideout alerting other guards of the intruders. The party tried to move deeper into the cave but as they moved into the main through-way of the cave Prim cast dancing lights to see better and were surprised by goblins waiting for them as they flooded the tunnel with water from a dam deeper in the cave. With great dexterity the party was able to get out of the way clinging to the higher parts of the wall except for Rowan and Pokeyman who were hit held on with their strength to keep from being swept away. 3 goblins descended upon the party and were hampered by Yue using her ray of frost to freeze the water under their feet making it hard for them to gain ground. Quinlan used his sneak attack rapier, Pokeyman attacked with his quarterstaff and Ydris with his shortbow while Yue blasted the 3rd one off of the ramp with a firebolt. The cave grew quiet again.

As the party continued through the cave they saw steep incline branching tunnel and Quinlan stealthily crept up it and saw goblins talking about what to do with the captives. Pokeyman, Rowan and Rorhic joined him and set upon the golbins while Yue Idris and Prim acted as the read guard at the bottom of the slope. In the ensuing battle one of the goblins slipped away and unleashed another flood at the rear guard. Yue and Prim were able to jump out of the way onto the slope in order to avoid the watery onslaught, but Idris was caught up in the current and washed out of the cave. The party slew the goblins and made their way into the goblin camp. They found the 2nd in command of cragmaw hideout, a goblin named Yeemik. He was holding a very beaten Sildar hostage. He grabbed him and held him over the edge as he realized his forces were going to lose. The fighting came to a stop and he divulged to the party that he wished to be the ruler of cragmaw and he would let Sildar go in exchange for Klarg’s head. The party agreed and they used one of Yeemik’s goblins to trick and lure out the bulk of Klarg’s forces. The party jumped these goblins and devastated them quickly. The party set off to find Klarg after learning that Gundren was no longer there and was taken to a place called Cragmaw castle.

The party passed by the Dam that the goblins were using to flood the tunnels with and found Klarg’s Throne room with him 2 body guards and his pet wolf waiting for them. The party set upon the Bugbear Klarg who unleashed his pet wolf snarl upon them. Snarl took a big bite out of Rowan injuring her while Pokeman Jones knocked one of the goblin bodyguards down the chimney they tried to climb up earlier. Quinlan jumped in and tried to stab Klarg with his rapier but klarg swatted it out of his hand into his fire pit, Rorhic joined in the assault and Klarg also dodged his darts until Yue Blasted him with magic missiles. Now injured Klarg called for his Potion Golem to protect him And proclaimed he would make a throne out of their bones.

The potion golem which looked like a giant animated potion of healing busted out of the wall and proclaimed “OH NO YOU’RE ALL GONNA DIE NOW” and healed up Klarg’s wounds. Idris attempted to hit all of them with a thunderwave but ended up knocking Rowan and Rorhic unconscious and putting a crack in the potion golem. With things looking grim Prim stepped in and used sleep to put Klarg Snarl and the golem to sleep. With this opportunity Quinlan grabbed his rapier from the fire pit and drove it through Snarl killing him quickly and Pokeman Jones ran his glaive through Klarg while he was asleep finishing him. With no master to control it the potion golem powered down and became an oversize cauldron filled with potion of healing. Remembering Pookee asked the party to collect interesting substances Prim attemped to lean over the edge to collect some but couldn’t quite reach. Pokeyman, Idris and Yue simultaneously tried to help him but ended up only pushing Prim into the giant glass container soaking his clothes with healing potion. There was enough left to fill 4 vials and Idris immediately drank one to heal up. The party decided to save one to give to Pooky later and Prim climed out of the golem, stripped out of his clothing and rung his clothes out into Rowan and Rorhic’s mouths sealing up their wounds and bringing them back to consciousness. Rowan healed Quinlan with a touch. Searching the room they found a light crossbow with the name Vera on it and a quarterstaff with the word Glimmer written on it. as well as a few other trinkets and gold. The party took Klarg’s head and made their way back to Yeemik going back the way they came except for Quinlan who jumped down the chimney landing hard on his face.

Approaching Yeemik he was pleased to see Klarg was dead and cautiously walked Sildar to the group at knife point. As he walked past Klarg’s head, Prim cast an illusion to make the head come alive which startled Yeemik and made him look away. Quinlan took this opportunity to shoot Yeemik with a crossbow bolt. With his last breath efforts Yeemik slashed a big gash in Sildar sending him unconscious. The party killed Yeemik and were able to stabilize Sildar just in time. As Sildar awoke he thanked the group and they catch up as to what occured. The party learned the following things:

  • The three Rockseeker brothers (Gundren, Tharden, and Nundro) recently located an entrance to the long-lost Wave Echo Cave, site of the mines of the Phandelver’s Pact. Klarg, the bugbear who led this goblin band, had orders to waylay Gundren. Sildar heard from the goblins that the Black Spider sent word that the dwarf was to be brought to Castle Cragmaw. Sildar doesn’t know who or what the Black Spider is.

The Phandelver’s pact:

More than five hundred years ago, clans of dwarves and gnomes made an agreement known as the Phandelver’s Pact, by which they would share a rich mine in a wondrous cavern known as Wave Echo Cave. In addition to its mineral wealth, the mine contained great magical power. Human spellcasters allied themselves with the dwarves and gnomes to channel and bind that energy into a great forge (called the Forge of Spells), where magic items could be crafted. Times were good, and the nearby human town of Phandalin (pronounced fan-duh-lin) prospered as well. But then disaster struck when ores swept through the North and laid waste to all in their path. A powerful force of ores reinforced by evil mercenary wizards attacked Wave Echo Cave to seize its riches and magic treasures. Human wizards fought alongside their dwarf and gnome allies to defend the Forge of Spells, and the ensuing spell battle destroyed much of the cavern. Few survived the cave-ins and tremors, and the location of Wave Echo Cave was lost.

Gundren had a map showing the secret location of Wave Echo Cave, but the goblins took it when they captured him. Sildar believes that Klarg sent the map and the dwarf to the chief of the Cragmaws at a place called Cragmaw Castle. Sildar doesn’t know where that might be, but he suggests someone in Phandalin might know. Sildar’s contact in Phandalin is a human wizard named Iarno Albrek. The wizard traveled to the town two months ago to establish order there. After the Lords’ Alliance received no word from Iarno, Sildar decided to investigate. Sildar tells the characters that he intends to continue onto Phandalin, since it’s the nearest settlement.

As the party learns all this from Sildar they make their way out of the Cragmaw Hideout, set up camp where they stated the previous night, inspect the cart which is untouched and safe, and they rest for the night after a hard day before setting off for Phandalin the next morning.

The Beginning
Session 0

Patrons begin filling into an Inn in the city of Neverwinter. This was a special Inn named Pookie’s Potions and Pillows. Adventurers would frequent this place to rest and stock up on healing potions. It was also well known for patrons to hire adventurers. Two such gentlemen enter, a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker and his human bodyguard Sildar Hallwinter. They sit in the corner and drink as they watch adventurers enter and mingle and get to know one another. One of them was a bard and began to play for his room and board for the night.

As the pair watched they decided on a particular table of adventurers to hire for their job. Gundren explained that his brother found something big and he was to meet him in Phandalin right away but they needed a group to escort a cart of supplies for barthon’s provisions as the roads were getting dangerous. The group agreed and were signed on.

As this deal was occurring A Goliath with radiant armor entered the Inn and overheard Gundren’s contracts and knowing the dwarf wished to test this fresh party to see if they were worthy of a job from him as well. This Goliath was the owner of the Thunderdome in Neverwinter which was an arena where adventurers and monsters pit their might against one another in sparring matches to hone their skills and earn some coin. They are renowned for providing entertainment to the city. The party agreed and headed over to that part of town. They met a little girl taking tickets there named Gwendayln and she instructed them to the proving grounds for the party to test their mettle.

As the matches began for the day Hyan Yue Wing, a human sorceress won the initial match decisively vs one of the area’s regulars with her arcane fire bolt. A Male elf druid named Idris Nailo won a close matchup vs a veteran of the arena. The Dragonborn Monk of their group, Rorhic, and Bard Prim Pressleaf also found success vs their opponents. The party was riding high cheering each other on until the last match of the day when their Rogue halfing was confronted with the strange little girl who was taking tickets in the arena. He struck with force that should have taken out a brute twice her size but Gwen split into 4 copies of herself and used magic missiles to overwhelm the halfling. Clerics overseeing the match quickly rushed in to heal him back up and take him back to the lobby where his party consoled him and teased him about losing to a little girl.

After the day’s events the Goliath, Wes the Shield, told the group he was impressed with their efforts and gave them the job of bringing back an important package from Phandalin which they agreed to and rejoined their Human Cleric Rowan Whiteshield who was finishing business in the city while the bouts in the Thunerdome were occurring.

The party set off down the Highroad escorting the caravan of supplies and turned onto the triboar trail with no issue until they came upon 2 dead horses with arrows sticking out of them which they recognized as Gundran and Sildar’s mounts. With sharp perception the party noticed the trap that befell them before goblins set upon them. With quick thinking as the horde rushed the party the bard Prim used magic to put most of the golbins to sleep and the party was able to pick off the remaining foes keeping one alive to interrogate.

The party discovered that the goblins successfully ambushed Gundren and Sildar and they were captured. They learned the location of the goblin hideout and some information on the hierarchy of those causing trouble in the area. Specifically Klarg who is in charge of the cave their patrons were taken to, King Grol who is his superior and owns Cragmaw castle, and also mention of a mysterious figure named the black spider who was funding them.

Armed with this knowledge the party set off for the Klarg’s hideout to try to rescue Gundren and Sildar. Along the way they discovered traps set by the goblins, Quinlan scouted ahead but stepped into a snare trap and was hung upside down. Luckily his party found him. Prim cut him down with his blade and Rorhic caught him in the nick of time preventing him landing on his head. Berating his ability to detect traps Rowan charged forward and took point but fell into a pit trap herself before being helped out by her companions. A little worse for wear the party made it to Klarg’s hideout. Klarg had goblins waiting in ambush in a nearby thicket but Yue’s fire magic burned a clear line of sight to the foes and they were dispatched quickly. As night was falling the party decided to make camp so they could bandage up their wounds and strike out into the cave the next day to save their friend.

Goblin Ambush: upon riding down the triboar trail the party discovered Gundren and Sildar’s Horses were slaughtered by goblins and they appeared to have been taken north to a cave. The goblins also tried to ambush the party but through keen perception the party spotted them and eliminated most of their ambush party. they left one goblin alive and interrogated them learning the following:
•There are Fewer than twenty goblins that currently dwell in the lair.
• Their leader is a bugbear named Klarg. He answers to King Grol, chief of the Cragmaw tribe, who dwells in Cragmaw Castle. (The goblins can provide basic directions to Cragmaw Castle. It’s about twenty miles northeast of the Cragmaw hideout, in Neverwinter Wood. The party never got this information from him)
• Klarg received a messenger goblin from King Grol a few days ago. The messenger told him that someone named the Black Spider was paying the Cragmaws to watch out for the dwarf Gundren Rockseeker, capture him, and send him anything he was carrying back to King Grol. Klarg followed his orders. Gundren was ambushed and taken along with his personal effects, including a map.
• The dwarf and his map were delivered to King Grol, as instructed. The dwarf’s human companion is being held in the “eating cave”.
The Party is actively searching for their mission patron Gundren and his bodyguard before it is too late.
